Traditional dances

The most common dance in traditional Bulgarian culture is the horo, a chain dance. It serves as a means of communication with the sacred world and encompasses the social, historical, and cultural experience of the community. The horo is more than just a dance: it is also a social event.

Dancers hold hands or each other’s belts and form a closed or open circle, which can take various shapes: circle, spiral, serpent, arc in a spiral, etc. There are hundreds of types of horo with different steps, enriched by symmetrical and asymmetrical rhythms typical of Bulgarian folk music and dance.
